Aerial Phenomenon

Caspar Fairhall

My work aims to combine figurative and abstract approaches. Even in an abstract painting such as Aerial Phenomenon, I make use of both linear perspective and flat forms. The work is derived from a cirrus cloud I saw backlit by the rising sun. Appearing both solid and vaporous, both two and three dimensional, the cloud struck me as an expression of illusory space.

I try to bring a painter’s sensibility to everything: a concern with image surface and illusion, form and volume, colour relationships and composition, and so on.
