This painting is a portrait of a woman and child. Phyllis was born in Busselton in 1913, delivered at home by her grandmother. She was the eldest of 13 children. Her daughter Gloria was born in Perth in 1931. Phyllis was an Aboriginal woman who grew up in the South West and her life story is available to read at the State Library. Her closing comments on her life show a valuable perspective on what is truly important “I look back and I think the happiest days of my life were when I was a little girl in Busselton. We weren’t rich, we weren’t poor, but we were happy and we were together.”
