Meelup Beach is primarily known for its white sand, sheltered bay and clear turquoise waters. I usually head straight for the beach upon parking – however this particular day, not long after the death of my mother, I took a path heading inland as the wind had whipped up a sandstorm on the shore. As the water always held such magnetic appeal for me, I had never previously taken the time to wander in this direction. The track meandered through a tangle of introduced and native plants. Sheltered. Calm. Messy. Chaotic yet grounded. The perfect place to find one’s breath and find slivers of light in the shadows.
