Gera Woltjer – Soft, XL (State of Mind) #1
|My artistic practice aims to articulate aspects of the human condition, identity, and the complexity of structures and patterns in the built and natural environment. I focus on materiality explored through processes such as drawing, photography, video, printmaking and site-specific installations.
During the COVID-19 lockdown, I retreated between the bare concrete walls of my studio and started drawing. For weeks I drew pointed mountainous shapes to create a seemingly sensory environment. The repetitive act of mark-making itself and the soft, scratching sound of liquid pen on paper acted as meditation.
Unlike my usual more conceptual work, where everything is carefully considered and designed, the shape and forms developed almost automatically. This automatic drawing worked liberating. In the seemingly still world, I found myself and rediscovered my love of drawing.
