Sue Leeming is an Australian resident born in Taranaki, New Zealand who identifies as New Zealand Maori, as well as being from English and Scottish descent. She attended The University of Auckland, Elam School of Fine Art and majored in printmaking graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree and Post-Graduate Diploma in Fine Art in 1995. She immigrated to Perth, Western Australia in 1998.
Her current practice is primarily based around painting and drawing mediums and extends ideas of abstraction, landscape, identity and spirituality. She experiments with the physicality of paint and process, allowing the imagery to spring from process. She is interested in plasticity and psychological responses to both cultural and physical environments.
Abstracting the land becomes a potent vehicle to address notions of dislocation, dysphoria and loss as they metamorphose to form a sense of place and belonging, connection and homecoming. Familiar forms, undulating horizons, layering over the landscape, disrupting lines and contours and recomposing silhouetted places found in the reservoir of her memory and in the everyday.
Exhibitions include: Minnawarra Art Awards, Finalist, 2021, SYNCHRONICITIES at STALA Contemporary Art Gallery, Traversing the Eternal Landscape at Turner Galleries, The Alternative Archive at Lost Eden Creative, 2019, South West Art Now 2018 at Bunbury Regional Art Gallery.
