Kate Webb – Road Plinth SOLD Acquisitive Local Artist Award

$400

In this photograph I attempted to navigate the relationship between sculpture and photography, taking into account varying contexts of space and light.

The image is a part of a series called Outdoor Plinths. I wanted to explore how stark white plinths, intended to blend in with their surroundings of the white walled galleries and not detract from any artworks that were to be placed upon them, would convert to an outdoor setting.

The goal was to exploit the tension between the traditionally neutral nature of the gallery plinth and the additional textured surface areas and painterly features so that observing the sculpture doesn’t take you out of the space in which the object exists, therefore reducing any internal relationship with the sculpture itself and determining it part of the landscape.
