Masked Border (Veils) by Jeremy Blank
Medium: Oils and ochres on canvas
Size: 1020 x 1020 x 45
The writing of Bruce Pascoe and Bill Gammage’s, Country: Future Fire, Future Farming has informed my recent work. The complexities of working from the lands we share, beyond simple representation, often disregards its use and traditional importance.
The Yaberoo Budjara series is drawn from life, plein aire, taking an iPad into the bush and working directly with transparent layering. They explore the fragility of bushland set aside as parkland to potentially become a firestorm. They are direct developments from the Masked Border works, where traditional materials are juxtaposed with hand ground pigment and glazes creating veils or scumbled surfaces, where ochres are washed over.
