Matthew McAlpine – In Strains

$1800

In Strains attempts to reflect upon the toxicity of colonialism and nationalism in contemporary Australia. Insidious systems and processes that continue to whitewash history, deny Indigenous culture, and rapidly degrade the environment. In the artworks, In Strains, a phrase from the anthem is altered and embedded in the painting’s centre.

The artwork poetically references both landscape and the leaching of toxins into the environment. A fragment of an ornate frame has been placed at the bottom of the painting, drawing upon the continued presence of colonial legacies in contemporary Australia. The use of hi-vis colours references the fossil fuel industry and its complicity in environmental degradation and exploitation.
