Megan Shaw – Natural Prototype
|Natural Prototype (2021) combines drawing and painting on found, industrial and domestic materials to create a playful and aesthetic sculptural outcome. The title of the piece relates to several intersections of meaning which the materials and their treatment reflect.
There are many qualities found in nature, such as geometry and mechanisation, which are continuously appropriated by humans. Nature’s physical properties have inspired architecture, design, technology, language and culture. After appropriation these natural prototypes expand into an inexhaustible referential system, where new utility and meaning perpetuate from borrowed elements until they no longer feel natural or practical or sensical or real.
I believe my work can be traced back to an understanding the world even if it does not reflect an obvious or natural prototype for this discovery.
