Melissa Cameron – Everything Must Go
|I found the green rack abandoned on my street a matter of days before lockdown in March 2020. It was clearly an artefact of the capitalist system, made obsolete. Seeing it, I sensed its opportunity. Hey, I’m inside the system.
The logic for these works came from the rack. Designed to hold 16 types of the same object, plus a sign, it had specific parameters. My work echoes this.
Neckpieces, each of about 800mm in circumference, were made from each row and each arm, using different lengths of green steel each time. Once that 800mm parameter was met, the leftover from that segment was used as tassels to adorn that neckpiece.
In this way end each neckpiece is different, yet each holds the same amount of green. And there’s still a place to display the works I have left as I haven’t used all of the rack. Yet.
